Frequently asked questions. And answers.

Where is the program held?

The training takes place at our workshop facility in Newton, Massachusetts. After that, apprentices who continue with Forge are expected to commute to jobs across the Metrowest region.

What specific skills or specialties does the program focus on?

As an apprentice on a heat pump installation crew, you will focus on providing effective jobsite labor and installing basic heat pump equipment like mini-split heads, line hides and line sets, condensers, condenser pads and stands, and ductwork.

What are the program requirements?

All applicants must:

  • have a U.S. driver’s license and a reliable vehicle to get to work every day,
  • consent to a background check, and
  • have U.S. work eligibility.
Do I need any prior experience to apply?

While experience and familiarity with tools and materials is a plus, they are not required. Almost two-thirds of our program graduates have no professional trades experience.

Is there an age limit?

Nope! We are open to any age as long as an applicant is looking for a full-time career in the trades.

Can I just do the training program if I don’t want a full-time job afterward?

Right now, Forge does not have an option to take our training program and then move on to a different job. We are looking to hire people for full-time jobs.

Who can apply?

What you don’t need: any professional trades experience (although an ability to work with tools and assemble things is necessary for success). What you do need: a U.S. driver’s license and a vehicle, to consent to a background check, to be eligible to work in the United States, and to be comfortable with heights and confined spaces, as a lot of our work is done on extension ladders and in attics.

What am I expected to bring or purchase?

We provide tools, materials, and personal protective equipment. You are responsible for your own work boots and clothing.

Does the program cost anything?

Nope! The Forge apprenticeship is a full-time job that starts with cost-free, unpaid training. You start getting paid after successfully completing the training and joining the team as an apprentice.

Is our apprentice program right for you?

If you want to learn new skills, work hard, and start a new career as a heat pump installer, then the odds are that yes, it is. A natural ability to work with tools and assemble things are necessary skills to be successful. Being comfortable with heights and confined spaces is also necessary, as a lot of our work is done on extension ladders and in attics.
